Today’s world is beset by corruption and violence. Honesty and integrity seemed to have got lost in this tangled web of dishonesty and greed. In fact values have steeped so low that women are often targeted and used to settle scores. In this land, where women were often revered and kept upon a pedestal, today they have been made the subject of acid attacks, rape and molestation. The honest and genuine common people together with the fairer sex desperately need a superhero to combat these crimes.

It is this scenario which sets the theme for the movie ‘Big Brother’ which is directed by Guddu Dhanoa. This movie brings to fore the ills of present day society and how they affect the common man. Why violence is used as a resort to secure justice by even the man on the street, is the theme of the movie.

The movie once again showcases Sunny Deol as the angry, angst filled young man. It begins on a soft note showing a young man, (Sunny Deol), who is committed to his family and beloved. Unfortunately his sister is a victim of an acid attack which forces him and his family to leave town. Ill luck however seems to follow him and he is once again stricken by trouble. Tired of trying to go by the law and seeking justice which doesn’t seem to deliver, Sunny Deol transforms himself into a people’s saviour. Tit for tat becomes the name of the game and the villains are now treated to their music. Donning the role of Big Brother, Deol delivers justice in his own aggressive style. Violence begets violence is the underlying message of this movie.

Amidst the mindless violence and gory scenes is the song Piya, which soothes the nerves and instills faith in human values. The music is by Sandesh Shandilya, Anand Raj Anand and the sensitive and poignant lyrics are sung by Shreya Ghosal , Kunal Ganjawala and Ustad Sultan Khan.

The song is very soft and melodious with light musical instruments. It does not have the loud bass and beats of modern day songs and is best heard solitary. It proves a fact that even today songs with meaning can be made without pandering to commercial interests. The song sends out a strong message of love and commitment where neither person can do without the other.

Shreya Ghosal in her husky and deeply haunting voice is able to set the pulse racing enough to make each person want to fall in love. Ustad Sultan Khan in his rich baritone voice ably matches her tempo. Both of them bring about richness to the song by singing the lyrics so sensitively and softly. This song makes one believe in love at first sight. The feeling of not being able to get one’s mind off a person and to continuously seek the loved one is beautifully brought out in this song. Priyanka Chopra and Sunny Deol, on whom this song is picturized do full justice to it.

It would be safe to assume that even in a world full of violence and bloodbath, romance still has a chance to bloom and flourish.
